Problems Calculating Grades

Engrade's grading system has been thoroughly tested and validated, we're confident that they are calculating correctly. The most common reasons for why a student's grade may be different from what you expect is that there is a typo or misconfiguration somewhere in your class. The first step in solving this problem is open the gradebook for one of your classes and find a specific student whose grades are in question, then click on that student's name. There you can see an individual report for that student, listing that student's scores for every assignment as well as their category averages (if you choose to use assignment categories). On that report you'll want to check for the following:

1. If you're using assignment categories, make sure all assignments appear and are categorized properly. If an assignment appears in the wrong category or does not appear, you'll need to re-categorize it by going back to your gradebook and clicking on that assignment's title.

2. Make sure the points possible for each assignments is correct. If not, you can click on the assignment title in the gradebook to correct this.

3. Make sure all of the student's score are entered properly as [blank] (which counts as excused), E, M, or a number. Any other entry, including any mix of numbers and letters, will count as a zero. If a score is incorrect, you can change the student's score in the gradebook.

If all of that information is correct, you will also want to click the Settings tab for the class in question and make sure that information is entered correctly. On that page, you'll want to check for the following:

1. Make sure you have selected the proper grading scale. If you selected custom grading scale, make sure it is in the proper format and make sure that your last entry ("F" for example) corresponds to a 0% - the last percentage in your custom grading scale should always be 0%.

2. In the weighted categories box, make sure that the "Yes" or "No" is checked at the top of that box to show whether want weighted categories or not. If you select yes, make sure that the percentages of your categories add up to 100%. Also note that Engrade will automatically excuse students from any categories do not yet have assignments.

3. Make sure you have checked or unchecked the drop lowest score button next to each category to show that you do or do not want to drop the lowest assignment score for that category. If you do check the box, make sure that all assignments in that category have identical or near identical points possible - that way dropping the lowest assignment will have the most benefit for students.
